DEAD FOR FREEDOM – I.C.S. A. GENTILI, PALERMO 2025
I am convinced that many of us can gather around this mural. I believe that here in Italy, and all around the world, it is possible to recognize ourselves around the women and men who have also given their lives for our freedom. I am also convinced that in spite of fascism and nazism, still spreading across the world – and that have maybe never truly disappeared – today more than ever we must all continue to be partisans. It is thanks to their contribution, and often to the sacrifice of their very lives, that today we can freely express our ideas, our thoughts, what we hold in our hearts.
I am happy that ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans) Palermo has asked me to paint these two partisans, two key figures in the fight against nazi-fascism, Olema Righi aka Wanda, from the North and Pompeo Colajanni aka Barbato, from the South. I am proud that today Palermo has a mural dedicated to partisans dead for freedom.
