A CURUNA (THE CROWN) – BAFIA 2024
A woman emerges from the past and carries on her head a heavy stockpot (a quaddaara) that she has just filled from one of the village fountains. In the background, the amazing skyline of the mountains, shaping the valley and fading into the horizon. Pouring from the container, a vigorous and colourful fluid moves back and forth connecting all the elements of this composition in a neat flow. The magical iridescent liquid symbolizes water as the source of life and is juxtaposed to the woman in the picture, who is a generator too. A curuna was the cloth which was placed between the head and the stockpot, both to amortise and stabilise the weight during the long and hard walks women had to face. The title we have chosen is a homage to the woman portrayed in this mural and to all the queens of our lives.
